Anniversaries

Never forget your anniversary again

Forgetting a birthday is a bad day. Forgetting your anniversary is a bad week. The fix isn’t a better memory, it’s getting reminded early enough to do something good, and having a backup for the year work gets in the way.

Which anniversaries to track

Start with the one that matters most, then add the ones that would earn you serious points.

  • Your wedding anniversary. Non-negotiable.
  • The day you started dating, if that’s the one you two celebrate.
  • Your parents’ wedding anniversary. A card from you will mean more than you think.
  • Your in-laws’ anniversary. Quietly one of the best moves a son-in-law can make.
  • Your siblings’ and best friends’ anniversaries, especially the big round numbers.
  • The day you moved into your first place together, or the day you got engaged, if those are your thing.

When to get reminded

The morning-of alert is the enemy. By then the good restaurant is booked and the card section at the pharmacy is picked over. Get reminded two weeks out, when there’s time to plan a dinner and get a card in the mail, and again a few days out as a last check. Handled sends both reminders for free, each with a link to a card ready to go.

Two weeks outBook dinner, plan the day, send the card
A few days outConfirm plans, pick up flowers or a small gift
The day itselfShow up. The card should already be there

What to write in an anniversary card

You don’t need to be a poet. The best anniversary cards do three things: name a specific memory, say what you appreciate now, and look forward. Keep it short enough that you’d actually say it out loud.

  • To your wife

“Happy anniversary. I’d still pick you out of every room I’ve ever walked into. Thanks for putting up with me.”

  • Early years

“Year three. Still the best decision I’ve made, and I once bought a boat. Happy anniversary.”

  • Big number

“Twenty years, two kids, one very patient wife. Happy anniversary. I love you more now than I did at the altar.”

  • Dating anniversary

“One year ago you laughed at my terrible joke and I knew I was in trouble. Happy anniversary.”

  • To your parents

“Happy anniversary, Mom and Dad. Thanks for showing me what it looks like to stick together. Love you both.”

  • To your in-laws

“Happy anniversary. You raised an amazing woman and somehow let me marry her. Thank you for both.”

  • To friends

“Happy anniversary, you two. Still the couple everyone wants to be seated next to. Cheers to many more.”

The backup for busy years

Some years the anniversary falls in the middle of a launch, a move or a week on the road. Switch on autopilot for that date and, if you haven’t sent a card yourself, Handled writes one from the details you gave (where you met, what you love about her, a running joke) and emails you a heads-up about ten days before it’s mailed. You can tap “Looks good,” “Edit message” or “Skip this one.” It’s written with a real pen, stamped, and mailed to arrive around the day.

Autopilot is opt-in for each person and date, and your saved card is charged only when a card is actually sent. The details are in how automatic cards work.

A card is the start, not the whole thing

A card in the mailbox says you planned ahead. It doesn’t replace dinner, a real conversation or putting the phone down for an evening. Think of it as the opening drive: it sets the tone for the rest of the day. While you’re adding your anniversary, add the birthdays too, starting with how to never forget a birthday again, and make sure Mother’s Day is on the list.

If you already missed it

It happens. Don’t make it worse with an excuse. Own it in one sentence, then make the late card about her, not about you. Something like “I blew the date, but I’ve never once forgotten why I married you” goes a long way. Then add the date to your list tonight, switch on the reminders, and make sure next year is the year you’re early. A late card that’s honest beats a perfect excuse every time.

The same goes for your parents or in-laws. A card that shows up a few days late with a real memory inside still gets read twice and kept. Silence is the only option that never lands.

Setting it up

  • Add your partner with your anniversary date.
  • Add a few details: where you met, a trip you loved, what she’d say about you.
  • Add your parents’ and in-laws’ anniversaries with their mailing addresses.
  • Choose which dates get autopilot and which just get reminders.

Questions

Is it free?
Reminders are free. Cards are pay-per-card, with the stamp included, and there’s no subscription. See [pricing](/pricing).
Can I send an anniversary card to my own home?
Yes. Plenty of people mail an anniversary card to their partner at home. It arrives like any other card, with a real stamp.
Can I add something only I would say?
Yes. You see the message in the heads-up before it’s mailed. Tap “Edit message” to add an inside joke, a memory or anything else, or write the whole card yourself.
When does the card arrive?
Cards are mailed to arrive around the day. Mail times vary, so we always call the arrival date an estimate.
